Avril finally won a competition in a radio contest that allowed her to travel to Ontario and sing with Country legend Shania Twain. Over the next couple of years she tried to make the U.S. recording industry to take notice on her music, but it wasn't until she was in New York at age 16 that she was signed to Arista records. Things began to roll when an Arista employee was so impressed with her music that he returned with his CEO to hear her sang. Once signed to the major label, she immediately dropped out of high school after 11th grade and moved to New York to begin work on her debut album. Unfortunately, it didn't work the way she hoped. Her time in New York was short-lived as she failed to meet her approval, and eventually moved to Los Angeles, California. From there, Avril eventually moved to the west coast to work with producer/songwriter Cliff Magness, and with more secured input, the two of them worked on compositions for her debut record. The fruit of her partnership and hard work with Cliff was apparent in early 2002 when her debut single ''Complicated'' was released in North America. </div>

In succession, Avril's first album "Let Go" was released by Arista on June 4, 2002, and immediately went to number one in Canada and soared high into the Billboard top 40 before eventually was certified "Quadruple Platinum" less than six months later by the Recording Industry Association of America. Along with her debut album success, Avril was named "Best New Artist" at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards and at the 2003 Juno Awards. In the latter event, she led the nominations with six nods, winning four of them namely for: Single of the Year ("Complicated"); Album of the Year ("Let Go"); New Artist of the Year; and Pop Album of the Year. Following the debut album's success and her fame, Avril was often compared to Alanis Morissette, Vanessa Carlton and Michelle Branch, who emerged at about the same time and were popularly credited. Apart from the critics, Avril herself tend to describe her first album as a pop album with "a couple of rock songs on it," and indicated a desire to write more rock-oriented songs in the future. Thus, she started working on her next album and wrote most of the lyrics in it with the help of Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk. She also co-wrote one track, "Nobody's Home", with Ben Moody, formerly of Evanescence, and the rest with her former lead guitarist Evan Taubenfeld. In an attempt to make her second album "Under My Skin" another success, Avril worked together with three producers, notably Butch Walker of Marvelous 3; Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace who is also Kreviazuk's husband; and Don Gilmore, who has produced Good Charlotte and Linkin Park. And so "Under My Skin" was done and released on May 25, 2004. Backed by her mother Subha Yagnik, a trained classical music singer, Alka started singing bhajans for Akashvani (All India Radio) Calcutta at an early age of six. By the age of ten, her mother took her to Mumbai as a child singer. She was advised to wait until her voice matured. Later, she got an introduction to Raj Kapoor, who in turn sent her with a letter to Laxmikant. Laximikant gave her two alternatives: immediately start as a dubbing artist or start later as a singer. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was born into a family of Qawwals in Faisalabad (then known as Lyallpur) in Pakistan. His father Ustad Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan is a well known Qawwal vocalist and harmonium player while his uncle was the renowned Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Rahat could sing by the age of three under the tutelage of his father. By the age of seven, his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan took over his training in classical music and by the age of nine, he gave his first public performance on the death anniversary of his grandfather, the legendary Fateh Ali Khan. He soon became a part of his uncle’s Qawwali group, which toured worldwide. Rahat performed his first solo ghazal Mukh Tera Sohneya Sharab Nalon Changa Ae in a concert at Birmingham on July 27, 1985. In the same year, he performed at solo song at the Harrow Leisure Center entitled Gin Gin Taare Lang Gaiyaan Rattaan. While doing subordinate roles with his uncle, Rahat, in conjunction with Eddie Vedder of the Rock Band Pearl Jam contributed to the soundtrack of the Hollywood film Dead Man Walking in 1995. He went on to work with American composer James Horner on the soundtrack of the Four Feathers in 2002.</div>

Pritam’s father Probodh Chakraborty, who ran a music school for children, trained Pritam on how to play the guitar. During his time at Presidency College, he was a member of Bangla bands like Chandrabindu and Jotugriher Pakhi. In 1993, he joined the Film and Television Institute, Pune to undertake a course in sound engineering, wherein he got a chance to compose background music for a film by Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Gaal. In between, he also managed to learn African music from Kedar Avati. Soon after he finished his course, he moved to Mumbai with Bollywood in his mind. In Mumbai, he teamed up with Sanjay Gadhvi, Shantanu Moitra, Rajkumar Hirani, and Chandrajeet Ganguly. When Gadhvi signed up to direct the movie Tere Liye (2000), Pritam and Chandrajeet (also known as Jeet) joined in as music composers, forming the Jeet-Pritam duo. The music won appreciation, but the film was a flop at the box office. In 2002, Gadhvi once again signed up to direct the movie Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, in which all songs composed by the Jeet-Pritam duo became chartbusters. After this, Pritam did one composition with Jeet for the movie Mudda-The Issue (2003) before they parted amicably. Later he composed for films like Fun 2shh - Dudes In The 10th Century (2003) and Agnipankh (2004) which did not fare well.</div>

Although Shreya Ghoshal was born in Behrampore in West Bengal, she spent her early years in Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota in Rajasthan, as her father was posted there. At the early age of four, she started learning Bengali songs from her mother who used to rehearse her singing while playing the harmonium at local club’s cultural activities. Shreya’s first stage performance was at the Club’s annual day function. At the age of 6, she started getting formal training in Hindustani Classical Music. She was taught Classical Hindustani Music by Rakesh Sharmaji of Kota and Shri Jayawardhan Bhatnagar her school's music teacher, and thereafter from Mahesh Chandra Sharmaji of Kota. Her initial exposure to Hindi film songs and Rajasthani folk songs came through the school music teacher. After shifting to Mumbai in 1997, she learned classical music from the late Mukta Bhideji. Later on, she received training in playback singing from Padmashree late Kalyanji Bhai.</div>

Her first success came in 1995 when she won the All India Light Vocal Music Competition organized by the Sangam Kala Group. Eminent musicians like Kalyanji - Anandji, and Pandits Rajan and Sajan Mishra, judged her during the various stages of the competition. Soon after, came her first TV performance called “Awaz Nayi, Andaz Wohi” on EL TV, which was also her first studio recording. By 1996, she won the 75th Children’s Special episode of Sa Re Ga Ma (now known as Sare Ga Ma Pa) contest on Zee TV. She won it again in the 200th episode held in January 1999. Regarding her participation in the contest Shreya says, “Sa Re Ga Ma, a popular Indian television show at the time, was on the lookout for talented singers. I grabbed the opportunity and mailed my songs in a cassette. Within days, I was called to audition.” The late Kalayanji convinced Shreya’s father to move to Mumbai saying he must do so if he wanted to see his daughter’s success in Bollywood, following which, her father requested a transfer to Mumbai. Shreya trained in playback singing with Kalayanji for 18 months. She then went on to record her first song as a professional singer in Marathi with the cover version of Ganraya Rangi Natchato, originally sung by Lata Mangeshkar.</div>

Entry into Bollywood</h2>

Her first studio albums like Bendhecci Beena (1998), Ekti Kotha (1999) and Bonomali Re (2002) in Bengali received some acclaim. Soon, director Sanjay Lal Bhansali gave Shreya her first break. According to Bhansali, his mother who was watching Sa Re Ga Ma, called him to watch Shreya’s performance where upon he immediately realized that Shreya’s voice had the innocence required for the portrayal of Paro in the film Devdas. Bhansali and music director Ismail Darbar offered Shreya to be the voice of Paro (portrayed by Aiswarya Rai) in the year 2000. All her five songs Silsila Ye Chaahat Ka (solo), Bairi Piya (with Udit Narayan), Chalak Chalak (with Udit Narayan and Vinod Rathod), Morey Piya (with Jaspinder Narula), and Dola Re Dola (with Kavita Krishnamurthy and KK)3 were well received. BairiPiya was an instant success and topped the charts and Shreya recollects,“I remember I was asked to rehearse the song once before finally recording it. I simply closed my eyes and sang without a break. When I opened my eyes, I noticed a lot of excitement and chaos outside the recording room. Then Sanjayji told me I had sung the songs so well, that they had recorded it at one go.” As she was also studying for her Higher Secondary examinations during that time, she would often take her school books and notepads to the studio to study during the breaks. The film Devdas helped Shreya earn her fame. Her song Dola Re won a Filmfare, IIFA, and a Zee Cine Award for the Best Playback Singer. She also won a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Bairi Piya. For her performance, she was bestowed with the RD Burman Award for New Music Talent. By 2003, she had begun singing in many big movies like Munna Bhai MBBS, Tujhe Meri Kasam, Saaya, Armaan, Xcuse Me, Out of Control, Jism and LOC Kargil. Her song Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai won her a Filmfare Award, an IIFA Award and a Screen Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 2004. The year 2005 began with songs for movies like Elaan, Blackmail, Jurm, Fun- Can be Dangerous Sometimes, along with Classic Dance of Love. This time the composers were Anu Malik, Kalyanji- Anandji, Sanjeev Darshan and Bappi Lahiri. Her song Agar Tum Mil Jao composed by Roop Kumar Rathod for the Film Zeher7 in 2005 was a chartbuster for a long time and figured in compilation of Evergreen Romantic Hits. The song won a nomination for a Filmfare Award, and was praised by critics and reviewers of Planet Bollywood and Glamsham. In between, she worked with many notable directors for films like Shabd, Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye, Mumbai Express, Nazar, Yakeen among others, until she recorded her next romantic hit Piyu Bole with Sonu Nigam for the film Parineeta also in 2005. The song Piyu Bole won the 2006 Screen Award for Playback Singer (Female). Her second National Award was for the song Naam Adaa Likhna from the movie Yahaan. Then came her films like Aashiq, James and Shaadi No 1, followed by films like Saawan, The Love Season, Chup Chup Ke, Krrish, The Killer, Omkara and Anthony Kaun Hain in 2006. Her own favourite at this time were Pal Pal Har Pal from Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which Planet Bollywood rated as amongst the Best Melodious Tracks of the year. After having sung for many movies like U Me Aur Hum, Sirf, Khushboo, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, and Kismat Konnection, her next hit song was Teri Ore for the film Singh Is Kinng. This song won her a fourth Filmfare and a fourth IIFA and her second Apsara Award. Later on, her songs in Ghajini became popular. However, the songs Pherari Mon from the movie Antaheen and Jeev Dangla from the film Jogwa got her the fourth and fifth National Film Awards. She continued to win State film awards in Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada. Some of her more popular songs include Yen Chellam for Tamil film Album, Vida Parayukayano from the Malayalam Film Big B and Kizhakk Pookkum from Anwar became great hits in Kerala and topped the charts. She then performed at the Cricket Association stadium at Sharjah, UAE. By late 2013, Ghoshal toured England and Europe in celebrating 100 years of Bollywood all over America and Canada. Even as she turned 30 in 2014, she released her first non-film ghazal album called Humnasheen, saying she was glad she chose ghazals as it gave a chance to do something she could not do in films as “Urdu poetry has its own charm and impact.”10 Her Tour Itinerary in May 2014 included De Montfort Hall, Leicester, Royal Albert Hall London, National Indoor Arena, Birmingham all in UK, and The Hague, Netherlands.</div>

Udit Narayan began his singing career with Nepali, Maithili and Bhojpuri, and often sang for Radio Nepal as a staff artist. He made his playback singing debut in 1980, singing a duet with Sushma Shrestha for the Nepali film Sindoor. After this, he moved to Mumbai on a musical scholarship to Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan. In 1980, music composer Rajesh Roshan asked him to sing for the Hindi movie Unees Bees giving Udit a chance to sing with the renowned Mohammed Rafi. Soon, Udit sang for a number of Bollywood movies including films like Sannata (1981), Bade Dill Wale (1983) and Tan Badhan (1986). By 1988, Anand –Milind gave him the opportunity to the hit movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak which earned Udit the Filmfare award for the song Akele Hain To Kya Gum Hai. The song is a copy of the instrumental ‘Return to the Alamo’ by the band The Shadows.2 In the early 80’s Udit also collaborated with Laxmikant Pyarelal for playback singing in movies like Hum, Saudagar, Prem Deewane, Aashiq Awara, Dil Hai Betaab, Trimurti, Deewana Mastana, among others.</div>

Later on, Udit worked with music director Anu Malik in playback singing for movies like Yaar Gaddar, Mr and Mrs. Khiladi, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Ishq, Refugee, Fiza, Badal and so on. Udit also started working with Jatin- Lalit just as they were making their debut as music directors in 1991. With them, he collaborated for films like Khiladi, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Albela, Hum Tum, amongst others. With music director Himesh Reshammiya, he also sang for films like Aamdani Athani Kharcha Rupaiyaa, Humraaz, Tere Naam, Ishq Hai Tumse, Run, Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa etc. Although Udit has worked with most music directors, his songs in films Rangeela, Lagaan, The Legend of Bhagat Singh, Kadhalan, One 2 Ka 4, and Taal under music director AR Rahman brought him much fame. Early Years</h3>

Sonu Nigam was born in a Kayastha family in Faridabad. At the early age of four, he joined father Agam Kumar Nigam on stage to sing Mohammed Rafi’s song Kya Hua Tera Vaada. He used to accompany his father to sing for weddings and parties. In his initial years, he continued to sing Mohammed Rafi songs often leading him to be called ‘a Rafi clone.’ He later moved to Mumbai when he was 19 years of age. In Mumbai, he was trained under Hindustani Classical singer Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Soon after, he started hosting popular TV shows like Sa Re Ga Ma in 1995. In the same year, he sang Accha Sila Diya for the film Bewafa Sanam.</div>

Sonu has acted in a number of films like Jaani Dushman: Ek Anokhi Kahani (1995), Kaamchor (1982) and Ustaadi Ustaad Se (wherein he played the role of young Mithun Chakraborty). He had earlier played the role of young Mithun Chakraborty in Hum Se Hai Zamana (1983) and the roles of young Sunny Deol and young Shatrughan Sinha in the films Betaab (1983) and Taqdeer (1983) respectively.</div>

His claim to fame came early, with the hit song Sandese Aate Hain for the film Border in 1997. This song won Sonu the Zee Cine Award, the Aashirwad Award and the Sansui Viewers’ Choice Award. 2 In the same year, he sang Yeh Dil Deewana composed by Nadeem - Shravan for the movie Pardes, and slowly began to form his own identity. By 1999, T- Series released one of his most successful albums Deewana, proving his talent for singing romantic songs. Sonu has the ability to sing in Hindi, Nepali, Assamese, Oriya, Chhattisgarhi, Bhojpuri, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Urdu. He has recorded with Ilyaraja, A R Rahman, Anu Malik, Jatin Lalit, Anand - Milind, Sajid - Walid, Nadeem - Shravan, and Mani Sharma among others. He has also released albums on Hindu and Islamic devotional songs. His songs in the album Budhha Hi Buddha expounds on Buddhist teachings. His other album Jiwala Jiwach Daan in Marathi is based on the life of BR Ambedkar, and contains some of his hit numbers from Bewafa Sanam. His strong affiliation to the songs of the legendary Rafi remained, when he re-released songs from his earlier album Rafi Ki Yaadein with a six-disc collection of 100 songs titled Kal, Aaj Aur Kal in 2007. Soon after releasing his album Classically Mild, he released a Punjabi single Punjabi Please and then went on to release a 2 disc album titled Rafi Resurrected with music by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) in 2008. He promoted Rafi Resurrected through a three-city tour of England. By 2009, he toured the US with Sunidhi Chauhan in a concert called the Explosion 2009, and then toured the UK again in a tour entitled All Izz Well in November 2010. His solo album Neene Bari Neeni in Kannada was also a big hit in 2009. In 2011, Sonu collaborated with Laximikant-Pyarelal for the Maestros Concert in which he once again sang Mohamed Rafi songs. By February 2014, Sonu released an online experimental single Trini Ladki a Chutney track with musical influences from Caribbean and Indian sounds.</div>
